J&K Assembly deputy speaker quits
A day after Jammu and Kashmir Assembly speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone's remarks against him in the local media, PDP legislator Sartaj Madni on Thursday resigned from the post of the deputy speaker.
"I have resigned from the post of the deputy speaker. The speaker has publicly and brazenly advised me to quit my post in interviews to the media," Madni told reporters outside the legislative Assembly on Thursday.
"I have tendered my resignation with utmost humility and with my personal regard to all honourable members of the house," he said in his resignation letter addressed to the speaker.
"It is now for the speaker to accept or reject it, but I have resigned," he said.
In interviews to the local media, the speaker had attacked the deputy speakar asking him to resign and become a spokesperson of the PDP.
In the house, Madni raised the issue and tried to seek clarifications from the speaker.
When the speaker ignored his repeated pleas, Madni shouted "give me a minute to explain my position."
"You have spoken against me in person and you need to clarify," he said.
Flashing a newspaper in which the speaker had reportedly asked him to resign for siding with the Opposition during a protest in the Assembly a day before on Wednesday, he stormed the well.
Law and parliamentary affairs minister Ali Mohammad Sagar criticised Madni for entering the well saying "this is unprecedented. This is unfortunate."
The Opposition PDP members, however, backed the deputy speaker.
