J&K ASSEMBLY TO DISCUSS AFZAL GURU RESOLUTION
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will hold a discussion on the controversial resolution seeking amnesty for Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru during its brief Autumn Session scheduled to begin September 26.
The private member’s resolution for the commutation of the death sentence of Guru, a resident of Sopore, was filed by Independent MLA Sheikh Abdur Rashid of Langeat constituency on September 1, 2011, ostensibly taking a cue from the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s resolution seeking clemency for Rajiv Gandhi’s killers.
It says, “Let the House resolve that Afzal Guru be granted amnesty, on humanitarian grounds, against the death sentence granted to him by the Supreme Court of India, for his alleged involvement in the December 13, 2001 attack on Indian Parlia-ment.”
The MLA said he has been informed by the Speaker that it will be taken up for discussion, debate and voting in the Assembly most probably on September 29, 2011. “It is listed in the Assembly business at serial number 2,” he said.
Twenty-two resolutions underwent a draw of lots on Saturday at the Assembly Secretariat here in the presence of the media.
