J&K leaders to meet PM Manmohan today
In perhaps an effort to apply some balm to simmering sentiments in the Kashmir Valley, and perhaps even look for a way out, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be meeting an all-party delegation from the troubled state here Tuesday evening.
Leading the delegation will be J&K CM Omar Abdullah who was in the national capital last week too to meet the PM. The Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP has decided to keep away from this meeting, just as it had last month when a similar meeting had been called in Srinagar by the CM.
For that meeting, the PM had personally called up Ms Mufti, urging her to attend. The PDP leader had then stated that nothing at the state government level would work and what was required from him was a “bigger initiative”. While she did not elaborate then on what this could be, it’s clear that an all-party meet called by the PM isn’t the initiative the PDP is seeking.
During Tuesday’s meeting, the PM is expected to elicit from the leaders of the various parties views on how to restore peace to the Valley. Apart from the state CM, others expected to participate in the meeting are Union minister and NC leader Farooq Abdullah, Saifuddin Soz from the Congress, Mohammed Yusuf Tarigami of the CPI-M as also leaders from the BJP, NCP, Panthers Party, BSP, SP and Democratic Party Nationalist.
