J&K panel to visit Leh, Ladakh
The Jammu and Kashmir interlocutors are expected to make their second visit to the state within the next fortnight and this time they would be visiting Leh and Ladakh. The interlocutors discussed the proposed visit to Leh and Ladakh in a meeting with home ministry officials earlier this week. The discussion took place in the backdrop of their first report submitted to home minister P. Chidambaram following their visit to Srinagar where that met prisoners in jails and recommended release of youth who were arrested for stone pelting during the recent protests in the Valley. Senior journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, who is one of the interlocutors, said that their second visit may come as early as next week.
During their visit to Leh and Ladakh, the three member interlocutor group, consisting of Mr Padgaonkar, renowned academician Radha Kumar and economist and information commissioner MM Ansari, would assess the ground situation and meet cross section of people to elicit their concerns on various issues including infrastructure and developmental needs of the area.
The Centre has already created a Special Task Forces for Jammu and Ladakh regions respectively. The STF is required to examine the allocations in terms of infrastructure needs and make suitable recommendations to overcome the deficiencies.
