‘J&K resolution based on justice’
Not freedom, not even the right to self determination, but a resolution of the Kashmir issue “based on justice” was the call made by Kashmir’s chief cleric and Hurriyat(M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday at the historic Jama Masjid here.
The Mirwaiz, who delivered the sermon at Jama Masjid nearly after a decade, didn’t even once use the word “freedom” or “right to self-determination” for the people of Kashmir that the Kashmir’s separatist leaders have often raised at similar gatherings in Kashmir and elsewhere.
“If you walk one step, we will take two (sic). But such advances should be based on mutual respect and acceptance of wrong doings. Our youth are being targeted by security forces across India. Many are lying in jails. Our basic constitutional rights are being violated. We want the resolution of the Kashmir issue on the basis of justice,” the Mirwaiz told the gathering of thousands who had come to offer Friday prayers at the mosque.
The Mirwaiz began his sermon on Friday afternoon by talking about the plight of the Muslims in India and also sought to link their sufferings with those Muslims in Kashmir Valley, “We are going through tough times. By using labels like radicals and terrorists, we are being targeted by the security agencies everywhere in India. I want to know when will this agony end,” he said.
Castigating both New Delhi and Islamabad for failing on multiple occasions to resolve the Kashmir dispute, the Mirwaiz vowed that any resolution of the Kashmir issue which doesn’t consider the will of the people of Kashmir will not be acceptable.
