J&K will be normal soon: PC
Union home minister P. Chidambaram told reporters shortly after a meeting called by the Prime Minister on Wednesday in view of escalating violence in the Kashmir Valley that the Centre would support the state government in restoring law and order in the state. He also hoped that the situation would come under control in the next few days.
The local population has resorted to frequent stone-pelting and attacks on security forces in the Valley and security personnel have on more than one occasion retaliated by opening fire, leading to civilian deaths.
Wednesday’s meeting was called in view of growing concern on the part of the PM about the continuing violence. Sources said the PM has been keeping track of the situation there and that he was briefed about it by home ministry officials and the security agencies.
Defending the CRPF — earlier criticised by Mr Abdullah for the firing incidents — the home minister said its personnel had to fire in self-defence. Mr Chidambaram said many of the young boys participating in the protests were misled by vested interests and asked parents to keep them home.
Conceding the need for some political action to calm the situation, the Centre has asked the CM and his Cabinet colleagues to visit some of the disturbed areas. He said the meeting also appreciated the statement of the J&K CM, “which largely corrected some wrong statements made earlier”, adding that Mr Omar Abdullah’s statement was “reasonable, clear and firm”.
