JNU student attacks a girl, then kills himself

A 23-year-old JNU student allegedly committed suicide after injuring a female classmate who spurned his advances.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Akash, a third-year student of the school of Korean language, attacked his classmate, identified as Roshni, 22, when they were sitting in the classroom.
DCP (South Delhi) Bhola Shankar Jaiswal told this newspaper the incident took place in room 213 on the JNU campus, at around 11 am.
“On Wednesday morning, the students were waiting for their professor inside the second-floor classroom when the incident took place. Akash was sitting next to Roshni. The students went outside to see their professor. In the meantime, Akash took out an axe and attacked Roshini, hitting her on the neck. He then fished out a knife and stabbed her in the back. Akash then consumed tablets of Sulphas (pesticide),” said the police official.
Hearing the commotion, the students rushed inside and found Roshni in a pool of blood. Akash then put the knife to his neck and threatened the fellow students to let him go, but he was overpowered. The students informed the police about the incident. The girl was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where she was undergoing treatment. Akash was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he succumbed during treatment.
Senior police officials immediately rushed to the spot and additional police forces were deployed at the JNU campus.
A hospital source at Safdarjung said the girl underwent successful surgery. “She will be under observation for two days,” said the hospital source.
In the meantime, sources posted with JNU said Roshni belongs to Gaya district of Bihar while Akash is a native of Patna. Akash was staying in Jhelum Hostel while Roshni was staying in the newly constructed Shipra Hostel. Some JNU students, who did not wish to be named, said Akash had recently proposed to Roshni but she turned him down. The police official said a countrymade pistol, poison bottle, a knife and an axe have been recovered from the crime scene.
