Joshi: Coalgate militates against constitution
Senior BJP leader and chairman of Parlia-ment’s Public Accounts Committee, Murli Manohar Joshi, has accused the UPA government of denigrating the Constitution over the Coalgate scam.
Speaking to the media here on Friday, Joshi asked whether democracy could survive when constitutional rights were being violated by the government.
“Accountability rests with both the judiciary and the government. It is a serious challenge as to whether the government will survive or not.
Any irregularity committed by the government affects the welfare of the people,” said the MP from Varanasi.
“When the prime minister himself refuses to accept the CAG's findings, which department will have the courage to prove that something wrong had taken place in the coal block allotment? Now, who would ensure that any further inquiry into the scam is not stalled,” Joshi asked.
He said the PAC would conduct a probe into the coal block allocations even if attempts were made to stall it.
“Dr BR Ambedkar, as chairman of the drafting committee of the Constitution, had rated the CAG on par with the courts,” he said and insisted that the CAG should be given the same respect.
