JPC asks for copy of Pranab letter
After demanding a copy of finance ministry’s note to the PMO on the 2G spectrum issue, members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) have now asked for the copy of finance minister Pranab Mukherjee’s letter to Prime Minister. Mr Mukherjee had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the 2G note created a major controversy.
In the wake of the 2G note, opposition has been demanding home minister P. Chidambaram’s, who was the then finance minister, resignation and clarification from the PM on the entire issue.
The JPC, which had taken strong objection to non-submission of the 2G note before the panel, it was learnt, wants the copy of Mr Mukherjee’s letter before its next meeting scheduled on October 12. The panel has summoned finance secretary R.S. Gujral on October 12 to explain why the note was not submitted earlier to the parliamentary committee looking into the 2G spectrum allocation scam. The ministry had made available copies of the note a day before the last meeting was scheduled.
During JPC’s last meeting on September 27, Opposition members had vociferously raised the issue of non submission of the 2G note.
Some of these members had demanded that finance secretary should be summoned on the same day itself.
The JPC had then demanded all departments and ministries related with the 2G issue to give affidavit stating that all relevant documents will be submitted before the panel.
