Kalam’s ex-driver on road to educate voters
Former President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s former driver Kathiresan is busy at Sankarankoil constituency educating the electorate against ‘selling’ their votes.
Dr V. Kathiresan worked as Dr Kalam’s driver when he was at the defence research and development laboratory (DRDL) at Hyderabad in the late ‘80s.
Now a history lecturer at Arignar Anna government arts college in Athur, he is at Sankarankoil, distributing notices instructing the electorate to diligently exercise their democratic right in the by-election.
This awareness campaign, being done on behalf of the diamond active trust he founded along with his friend, Vijayan, has drawn the local youths. The purpose of the campaign, says Dr Kathiresan, is to make voters realise the true value of their votes.
Political parties have also welcomed the campaign. MDMK spokesperson Mohammed Ali said, “The overwhelming public response to Dr Kathiresan’s campaign signals success for Vaiko’s candidate, who stands for people’s welfare.”
DMK candidate Jawahar Suryakumar believes it will be of great help in his fight against the ruling party that he alleges has unleashed muscle and money power. The AIADMK men welcome Dr Kathiresan’s mission as “it would save the electorate from falling a prey” to the ‘Alagiri formula’.
