Kalmadi’s Tihar stay extended

A Delhi court on Wednesday extended the judicial custody of the sacked Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) chief Suresh Kalmadi for 14 days more.

While remanding the 66-year-old suspended Congress MP from Pune to Tihar jail till June 1, special CBI Judge Talwant Singh also extended the jail custody of two other top officials of the Organising Committee — joint director-general (sport) A.S.V. Prasad and deputy director-general (procurement) Surjit Lal — for the same period.
The accused trio had been arrested on April 25 by the CBI for awarding the contract to the Swiss firm to install a Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system, for the sports extravaganza, at an exorbitant cost, causing a loss of over `100 crores to the public exchequer.
The court also extended the judicial custody of OC’s former secretary-general Lalit Bhanot and former director-general V.K. Verma till May 24, keeping in view the fact that the stipulated 90 days’ period to file chargesheet against them after their arrest will expire on the same day.
Meanwhile, Lal and Prasad moved the court for bail and their pleas will be heard on May 20.
Mr Kalmadi too had earlier sought bail from the court, which has reserved its order on his plea for May 21.
The CBI had opposed Mr Kalmadi’s bail plea saying that he had “tarnished the image of the country”.
The court, meanwhile, directed the Tihar jail authorities to explain why Bhanot and Verma were not produced before it in time for extension of their judicial custody.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
