Kani seeks appearance date change from ED
Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of DMK supremo M. Karunanidhi, Ms Kanimozhi, who was to appear before the ED officials for questioning for the first time on May 13 in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, has now sought an exemption from appearing before the agency.
While she hasn’t cited any convincing reason for seeking this exemption from appearance, ED officials said that they are yet to take a decision on her request. May 13, incidentally, is also the day when the results of the Assembly polls in four states will be declared. Tamil Nadu is among the four states.
Sources in the ED said, “Most likely she will be granted exemption and will be given another date for appearing before the ED for questioning. However, final decision over the issue will be taken on Thursday only.” Even, Sharad Kumar, managing director of the Kalaignar TV, has also sought another date instead of May 13 for his questioning in connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scam, sources said adding that the duo appeared before the ED on Wednesday to seek another date instead of May 13 for their questioning. The ED officials are expected to question them in connection with alleged transfer of `200 crores to Kalaignar TV by company-linked telecom promoter Shahid Balwa also, sources added.
Sources said the two have sought more time because of time constraints and their inability to complete documentation they have been asked to produce at their appearance date. The two are expected to appear before I-T authorities in Chennai on Thursday.
