Kanimozhi may get congress votes in Raya Sabha poll
Chennai: DMK nominee Kanimozhi is most likely to get the support of the Congress and sail through in the June 27 Rajya Sabha poll, informed sources said.
They said the announcement to this effect may be made either by AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik or party president Sonia Gandhi herself “within the next couple of days”.
The Congress decision to support the bid for a second term by the DMK chief’s daughter was taken following a meeting of party parliamentary leader T R Baalu with Defence Minister and Congress senior leader A K Antony at Delhi on Saturday. DMDK leader Vijayakanth too had sent his brother-in-law Sudheesh to Delhi for getting Congress support for his RS nominee.
The DMK emissary, sources said, reminded his host at South Block that his party had helped in the election of G K Vasan and Jayanthi Natarajan to the Rajya Sabha. Antony reportedly replied that his party would not like to take a one time decision but to keep in view its future interests in Tamil Nadu—meaning the 2014 Lok Sabha poll. Sources also said that the Congress leadership was now convinced even the support of its five MLAs would not be able to save the shrinking DMDK in the RS poll.
