Karat: Confidence vote farcical, violated norms
The CPI(M) on Tuesday termed the vote of confidence by the BJP government in the Karnataka Assembly “farcical’’ and said that a fresh vote should be taken in the House for it to prove its majority.
“The vote of confidence conducted in the Karnataka Assembly was farcical and a gross violation of democratic norms,” party general secretary Prakash Karat said in a statement. He demanded that “a proper vote of confidence must be taken in the Assembly in which all MLAs are allowed to participate and the vote recorded. “Without doing so, the Yeddyurappa government cannot be treated as having acquired a vote of confidence,” Mr Karat said.
The CPI(M) politburo in a statement on Monday had quoted the Supreme Court judgment in the Bommai case and said “a government has to prove its majority on the floor of the House to continue in office. Any disqualification of an MLA can occur only after the vote when the party whip has been violated. Further, this cannot apply to independent MLAs.”
“All this constitutes a brazen constitutional impropriety and cannot be allowed. The Yeddyurappa government cannot remain in office unless it establishes its majority through a division of votes on the floor of the Assembly,” it had said.
