Karat defends sfi, protests gov comments
Given the changing political situation in West Bengal, particularly with Trinamul on the backfoot following its attack on the Presidency campus, the CPI(M) indicated on Thursday it will not take disciplinary action against SFI leaders for the attack on chief minister Mamata Banerjee, finance minister Amit Mitra and others at the Planning Commission here Tuesday.
Instead, the party will fight “politically and legally” if police action is taken against SFI cadres. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat is learnt to have told its student wing that the party stands firmly behind them.
Stepping up pressure, Mr Karat also wrote to President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday saying West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan’s comments seeking an apology from the CPI(M) politburo was “unwarranted” and “does not behove the post of governor”.

North korea keeps world on the edge
Seoul, April 11: North Korea kept the world on edge on Thursday over an expected missile launch while turning its own energies to celebrating leaders past and present amid soaring tensions on the Korean peninsula.
The United States warned North Korea it was skating a “dangerous line”, as South Korea stayed on heightened alert for any missile test that could start a whole new cycle of tensions in a region already on a hair-trigger.
G-8 foreign ministers meeting in London drove home the message, condemning “in the strongest possible terms” the North’s nuclear activities and threats to the region.
