Karat says UPA is a government of ‘ghotalas’
CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Sunday came down heavily on the UPA government in the Centre headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Alleging that the government had indulged in massive corruption at the Centre, he described it as a “government of ghotalas”. Addressing the open session of the 20th state conference of his party in Tripura he tried to draw a comparison among the governments run by the leftists and their other counterparts and urged the people to come to a conclusion about their future.
Interestingly in the only state where the leftist government is still surviving, the party shunned all major state or national issues and took “socialism is the future, future is for us” as the main slogan for the conference.
Mr Karat also spent most of his 36-minute-speech highlighting the bright prospect of socialism in the world.
He criticised the policy of liberalisation and scuttling the claim about the economic growth he said it only made more millionair-es in the country and none of the benefits has percolated among the downtrodden.
“The fact that 2,56,000 farmers have committed suicide due to debt problem in the country since 1995 alone is enough to prove the economic condition of the country”, he said.
Politburo member Sitaram Yeatury, Brinda Karat and central committee member from Assam Narul Huda also attended the conference but, interestingly, none from West Bengal was invited though the party units in these two states have worked closely since the formation of the CPI(M).
Chief minister Manik Sarkar also addressed the open session and warned the party workers a serious challenge is ahead and urged to fight it bravely. The conference will continue for next three days.
