Karkare wife criticises Digvijay
Ms Kavita Karkare, along with the BJP and Shiv Sena, on Saturday slammed Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh for his comment that the late Hemant Karkare had feared for his safety from Hindu extremists who were opposed to the Malegaon investigations.
Mr Singh claimed that he had spoken to the slain Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad chief between 6 and 7 pm on November 26, 2008, when Karkare had talked about a threat to his life from those opposed to his probe into the Malegaon blast in which Hindu extremists were accused, Mr Singh said.
Reacting to Mr Singh’s comments, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javdekar said, “He is only helping Pakistan and Qasab by making such statements. The world knows that Kasab and his companion killed Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar. It seems that the Congress just wants to shift public focus from the corruption charges against their leaders, which is why Mr Singh was directed to make such a baseless comment.”
The BJP spokesperson also questioned why Mr Singh did not appear before the Ram Pradhan committee that investigated the 26/11 attacks. He also demanded that the PM and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi clarify whether they are in agreement with Mr Singh or not.
“On the one hand, we have been sending dossiers to Pakistan on 26/11 attack perpetrators while on the other, a senior leader from the ruling party is suggesting that Mr Karkare was not killed by a Pakistani terrorist. This is nothing but vote bank politics. Mr Singh’s comments will only suit Kasab, who could call the Congress leader to testify for him in the court,” Mr Javdekar said.
The Shiv Sena, the BJP’s partner in the NDA, also criticised Mr Singh for his statement. MP and Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut demanded that Mr Singh be made an accused in the 26/11 case and his claims be investigated.
“If Mr Singh was aware of the threats to Mr Karkare’s life, why did he keep quiet for two years even after Mr Karkare’s death?” Mr Raut said.
Mr Singh should be subjected to a probe. What the two men talked about should be made public,” Mr Raut said.
