Karnataka govt’s decision decried
The Supreme Court on Monday decried the Karnataka government decision effecting changes in the rule for admission of serving MBBS doctors and dentists in the PG courses by doing away with the “rural weightage” for serving the rural people.
A vacation bench of Justices R.M. Lodha and A.K. Patnaik took strong exception to the sudden change of the rules by issuing a “corrigendum notification” in 2007 and stayed the state high court order approving admissions of serving doctors in PG course mines “rural weightage”.
“It is a waste paper. It is a useless document and is not even worth of the scrap of paper and should be thrown in the dustbin. You cannot change the eligibility (for admission) like this,” the bench observed, while issuing notice to the Karnataka government on the issue and sought its reply.
The court was also equally annoyed with those doctors supporting the admission minus “rural weightage” marks saying, “You want to enjoy urban posting and don’t want to go to the rural areas, but at the same time wanted that those serving the rural poor would not get this benefit either.”
