Karunanidhi keeps all guessing on polls
Chennai: Uncertainty continues in the DMK camp over the ensuing Rajya Sabha polls. ‘Undecided’ was the word the DMK chief M Karunanidhi chose to use after holding a meeting of party MLAs at Anna Arivalayam on Thursday.
Karunanidhi told reporters that they have not taken any decision on the RS polls as yet and they would discuss and take an appropriate decision at the right time. Asked if they sought CPM's support, Â Karunanidhi said they have not sought a party's support in particular and they would hold dialogue with all parties in general.
Karunanidhi's meek response nearly belied rumours that DMK has opened channels with CPM so that it could comfortably renominate its RS candidate and sitting MP Ms Kanimozhi. With the CPI choosing to nominate its candidate, apparently by cozying up to the AIADMK, DMK's options remain reduced.
Questions linger if the DMK would succeed in persuading a stoically silent DMDK to back its nominee and return the favor later. Given the recent aversion shown by PMK for the Dravidian majors, DMK's chances have been further narrowed.
Meanwhile, DMK is said to have ensured the support of the five Congress MLAs despite snapping ties with it in March last. Party insiders revealed that a senior Congress envoy from '10 Janpath' had visited Karunanidhi's CIT colony residence a week back. If the CPM chooses to back fellow comrade, a development mostly likely to happen, the DMK would have none but the DMDK to approach besides the fringe party's like PT and MMK, which are in AIADMK's kitty.Â
