Kejriwal seeks more time over I-T dues
Failing to meet the deadline in paying up his `9 lakhs dues to the government as per the income tax notice, Team-Anna Hazare member Arvind Kejriwal, who is also a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, on Thursday sought more
time to settle the amount. He claimed that he was given “very little time”.
As the deadline for paying the dues ended on Thursday, Mr Kejriwal said, “I am consulting my friends and will take a decision in a week or ten days. They had given me very little time.”
Meanwhile, I-T officials informed that as service rules, they could initiate property attachment proceedings and subsequently, initiate criminal case against a person, who defaults on dues. “But it entirely depends on whether the department accepts the request for extending further the deadline,” they added.
The office of the Chief Commissioner of income tax (CCIT) had on August 5 issued a notice to Mr Kejriwal asking him to pay `9.27 lakh claiming that he had violated bond clauses under which he went on a study leave for two years. The social activist was asked him to deposit the money.
