Kerala is all set for polls on Wednesday
All preparations have been completed for the elections to 13th Kerala Assembly to be held on Wednesday.
Distribution of polling materials was completed on Tuesday evening. Polling will begin on 7 am and conclude at 5 pm on Wednesday.
Among prominent candidates seeking the approval of voters are Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who is contesting from Malampuzha, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy, from Puthupally, and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, from Haripad.
While home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is contesting from Thalasserry, BJP veteran O. Rajagopal is testing his fortunes in Nemom.
It is after a particularly acerbic and high-voltage campaign full of mutual recrimination and mud-slinging that the state is going to the polls.
Around 80,000 policemen and 1,25,00 presiding polling officers have been deployed across the state for the smooth conduct of the election. In all, 20,758 polling stations have been set up. There are 2, 31, 47,871 voters in the state and 971 candidates are seeking their mandate in 140 constituencies.
As many as 15,000 auxiliary Electronic Voting Machines have been kept ready to meet any emergency situation.
Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto said engineers from Electronic Corporation of India have been deputed across the state to provide technical assistance in case EVMs malfunction.
Each EVM can accommodate the names of maximum 16 candidates.
Since no constituency in Kerala has more than 16 candidates, all polling stations will be using single EVM for voting.
Presiding officers would send details about the poling percentage to EC at every two hours through SMS. This would shorten the time for required for the consolidation of voting percentage data.
