Kerala had no authority to detain Italy’s Enrica Lexie: Centre
Striking a big blow to the Kerala government, the Centre told Supreme Court on Friday that the Kerala police had no authority to hold the Italian ship Enrica Lexie.
Two Kerala fishermen, Jelastine and Ajeesh Pink, were killed after two Italian marines on board Enrica Lexie opened fire at them.
The Centre told SC that Kerala had no jurisdiction to detain the ship as the incident took place in international waters.
Reports say that Kerala government will take a decision on further action after consulting legal experts. The case has been adjourned till April 30.
The marines Latorre Massimilano and Salvatore Girone are currently under custody of Kerala police.s
Earlier on Thursday, Deccan Chronicle reported that the Republic of Italy has agreed to pay Rs 1 crore each as compensation to the families of the two fishermen killed at sea from firing off the Italian oil-tanker near Kochi shore in February.
The compensation agreement was reached between the families of the two fishermen and Pasquale Preziosa, Chief of the Italian Ministry of Defence, who along with other Italian officials met the family members on April 12 and 13 at Quilon Beach Hotel, Kollam, and Mascot Hotel and South Park Hotel in Thiruvananthapuram.
