Kerala stands 3rd in criminal cases
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is inching ahead of other states in crime records too like in the matter of liquor consumption. It stands third in respect of the total number of cases registered in the country during 2012, according to the National Crime Records Bureau statistics.
While the total number of cases registered across the country during the year was 60.41 lakhs, in Kerala alone it was 5.11 lakh. Uttar Pradesh topped the tally with 18.24 lakhs while Tamil Nadu stands second with 7.49 lakh.
Out of the 5,11,278 cases registered, 1,58,989 were under various sections of IPC, while 3,52,289 were under various special and local laws. Out of the 24,923 rape cases reported in the country during 2012, 1019 were from Kerala.
Another disturbing trend is that out of 1,019 rape victims, 47 were raped either by parents or close relatives, while 50 by relatives and 203 by neighbours.The NCRB also presents an interesting fact about Kerala. While 3,193 complaints were received against police personnel, 2,540 were found to be false. Cases were registered against 208 police personnel.
