Kerala, Tamil Nadu cultural meet on Mullaperiyar dam ends in scuffle
A Track-II diplomacy attempted by writers and cultural figures in Kerala and Tamil Nadu to find alternative solutions to the Mullaperiyar imbroglio ended in chaos in Kottayam on Saturday.
It was Congress MLA Mr V.T. Balram’s statement which seemed to have provoked a section of the participants.
Balram’s statement, read out at the venue, called for an alternative solution other than the construction of a new dam. Just when the statement was read out, 20-odd people of the Mullaperiyar Action Council barged onto the dais shouting slogans, pushing the participants and disrupting the proceedings.
The meeting was organized by the Tamil-Malayalam cultural group ‘Uyiru.’
The earnest entreaties of Civic Chandran, J. Devika and Tamil writer Charu Niveditha went unheeded.
