Khadse loss affects Sena-BJP alliance?
The shock defeat in last week’s legislative council election of Nikhil Khadse, son of the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Eknath Khadse, has unsettled the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. However, senior BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad on Sunday played down the incident saying that it would not affect the 25-year-old alliance between the two parties.
Mr Nikhil Khadse lost the election for the Jalgaon local self-government constituency seat of the state Legislative Council, after which his father had openly alleged local Sena leaders for having “sabotaged” his win.
Mr Nikhil Khadse polled 228 votes, while Manish Jain, son of NCP MP Ishwarlal Jain, secured 243 votes. Official NCP candidate Anil Choudhary polled 81 votes, while Mr Manish Jain contested the election as an Independent.
Mr Eknath Khadse has blamed Sena MLA Sureshdada Jain for covertly supporting the Independent candidate. However, BJP general secretary Mr Prasad said that the Sena would continue to be part of the National Democratic Front alliance.
