Kidwai moral policing remark enrages BJP
The Rajya Sabha on Thursday witnessed heated exchange of words between BJP and treasury benches, when Congress MP Mohsina Kidwai tried to raise the issue of “moral policing.” The Congress MP, during Zero Hour, expressed concern over recent incident of “moral policing” by Bajrang Dal and Dharam Sena in Raipur. She said India is a multi-cultural society and no group can force anybody, alleging girls were chased, their hair pulled and faces blackened by the groups.
As soon she mentioned Bajrang Dal, BJP members were up on their feet asking her to give evidence in support of her charges against the organisation. Another Congress MP Ms Jayanthi Natrajan accused BJP members for not allowing Ms Kidwai to raise the issue for which Chair had given her permission. But BJP members kept disturbing Ms Kidwai. BJP MP, Vinay Katiyar countered her by saying that those arrested by the state police for the incident also included Congress workers who manhandled the youth. Deputy chairman K. Rehman Khan, who tried to bring order in the house said, “we have to learn to respect. We are derailing a very good Zero Hour. With your quarrel, our blood pressure will go up.”
Later, Mr Katiyar was supported by party colleagues Mr Rudra Narayan Pani, Mr Balbir Punj and other BJP members. Mr Pani was reprimanded by deputy chairman K. Rahman Khan when he angrily pointed a finger at CPI(M) member Ms Brinda Karat during the heated arguments. “You have no business to threaten another member,’’ Mr Khan told Mr Pani, asking him to maintain decorum in the House. Ms Kidwai was finally allowed to speak after she said she will not name any organisation.
