Koli death confirmed, Pandher plea pending
New Delhi, Feb.15: In one of the shortest hearings in an appeal on the capital punishment, the Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence to Surendra Koli in one of the sixteen cases of “Nithari brutalities” against minor girls sexually abused and killed in a series of macabre crimes committed during 2005-06.
The lawyers of the apex court described the judgement delivered by Justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra as one “decided in the shortest possible time” and creating a history of the sort while the judges said “no mercy can be shown to Koli. The facts of the case are gruesome and horrifying”.
However, the bench kept pending the petitions of CBI and the father of brutalised girl Rimpa, challenging the acquittal of Koli’s employer — wealthy businessman — Moninder Singh Pandher, by the Allahabad High Court, giving him benefit of doubt. Regarding Koli, the bench asked, “How could he be unaware of the serial crimes taking place inside his house.” The bench kept the petitions against Pandher pending they felt that any decision might “prejudice” his case.
