Kolkata shuts down, Metro saves day
Streets of Kolkata and its suburbs wore a deserted look on Wednesday as virtually no public buses were plying.
The number of taxis was also too few. Most of the shops and markets in the city were also closed. Metro rail was the only lifeline of the city commuters. However, suburban train services in both Howrah and Sealdah divisions were normal.
For the movement of the security personnel and polling officials, the Election Commission (EC) requisitioned more than 80 per cent of the public buses from Kolkata, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.
Around 95 per cent of the minibuses also went off the road for the same purpose. Since the public transport system in Kolkata and its suburbs are largely dependent on private buses and minibuses, the commuters faced great difficulties in moving to one place from other. Though the EC hired only around 5,000 taxis for poll purpose, taxis was also seen in very few number in the roads.
