Kolkata top cop refuses to meet Left delegation
City commissioner of police Surajit Kar Purokayastha has refused to meet a Left Front delegation and receive a memorandum on the attacks on their party workers.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose on Friday announced declaring the refusal as undemocratic. “This clearly shows the blatantly partisan attitude of the police. Since Independence, no police chief of the Kolkata police had ever acted in such a partial and undemocratic manner,” he added.
Mr Bose added that as per the Front’s programme, all district units have been submitting memorandum to district magistrate on attacks on party workers and offices and general deterioration in law and order. “We have planned to conclude the submission of these memorandums by April 30,” he added.
Mr Bose said that the Kolkata district Left Front leaders contacted Mr Purokayastha to meet him and submit a memorandum. “But the commissioner told us that it was not possible for him to meet any delegation from the Left Front. But he was ready to meet each of us individually. We don’t know what kind of democracy is prevailing in our state. Our chief minister had promised to bring an end to party interference in administration. But her police chief has refused to meet any delegation from the Opposition party. Is this a democracy?,” he asked.
