Kozhikode twin blast: Naseer, Shafaz found guilty
The Ernakulam NIA court on Thursday convicted Lashkar-e-Toiba activist Thadiyantavide Naseer and his accomplice Shafaz, the first and fourth accused in the Kozhikode twin blasts case.
The court acquitted third accused Abdul Haleem on the ground of want of evidence and ninth accused Chettipadi Yousuf giving him the benefit of doubt.
The second accused Muhammed Ashar and eighth accused P.P. Yousaf are absconding while sixth accused Fayiz died in an encounter at Kashmir. The court will pronounce the sentence on Friday.
Recording the submissions made by Shammi Firoz, the seventh accused who turned approver, during the course of trial, NIA Special Court judge, Mr S. Vijayakumar, observed "it has got the glow of truth glittering behind the twin blasts."
He further observed that Naseer placed a bomb at the KSRTC bus stand and it was at his instance and instigation that a bomb was placed at mofussil stand, both of which exploded.
“The motive was promoting enmity between groups of different castes and community,” said the court. “The entire act has been a result of criminal conspiracy.”
“It is significant to note that the accused chose a Friday at the time fixed for the Juma prayer for exploding the bomb so that all believers will be at the mosques leaving the rest to the rules of chances,” the court held.
During the court proceedings Naseer and other accused were unmoved and impassive. Relatives of the accused were also present.
