Krishna dispute: Hunger strike against water verdict
The last time he went on a fast was for stricken farmers in Andhra Pradesh and now, it's against the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal verdict.
The former Congress MP will sit on a fast at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest, what he claims, is 'injustice' to Andhra Pradesh.
On December 30 last year, the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal, in its verdict, awarded the largest share of water from Almati dam to Andhra Pradesh, allocating 1001 TMC.
The tribunal also allocated 911 TMC of water to Karnataka and 666 TMC to Maharashtra.
But many claim Andhra wins only on paper and the state government has, in principle, decided to appeal against the order.
Karnataka has been allowed to impound more water at the Almatti dam, which means that state can increase the dam height to 524 metres, which will adversely affect AP.
The major irrigation minister, Mr P. Sudarshan Reddy, said the state had lost about 448 tmc ft because of the tribunal’s decision on redistributing the surplus waters.
The Bachawat tribunal had given AP the 'liberty to use' all the remaining waters (un-allotted, unutilised and over and above the overall allotments) in the river. This facility has been withdrawn.
