Krishna yet to flow to Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Andhra Pradesh has delayed water release from Kandaleru yet again. First, it promised to release water early June and subsequently delayed it by a fortnight. The date has now been changed to June 26 or 28. And the reason cited was obvious: Canal repair at Ubbalamadagu in Andhra.

Senior TN WRO (water resource organization) officials said the repair was nearing completion and they expect water to be released from Kandaleru reservoir in a week.

Much to the discomfiture of Chennai Metro Water (CMWSSB) officials who hoped that they would get water from June 20, the steep rise in mercury levels had not only triggered demand but also increased the water loss due to evaporation. On Friday, the joint storage of the four city reservoirs, Poondi, Puzhal, Chembarambakkam and Cholavaram only stored 1.7tmcft, over 2.2tmcft less than what they had stored the same day last year.

The present storage, which is less than 20 per cent of the total capacity of 11.057tmcft, will last for little over a month. AP should release 12tmcft to Chennai in two intervals, 4tmcft for January-April period and the remaining 8tmcft for July-October period. Except on two occasions, the city has never received over 8tmcft in any water year ever since the two states signed the water sharing agreement in 1983.

Tamil Nadu, which did not get its due share in the last water season owing to failed rains and repair works, appealed to AP  to release in June.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
