KSEB offers prepaid meters for farmers
Thiruvananthapuram: The KSEB has proposed the introduction of âprepaid meteringâ for its 4.68 lakh agriculture consumers. Un-der the proposal, those who opt for âpre-paid meteringâ and limit their consumption to a prescribed level will be billed at the existing rate. For other consumers, the board has recommended a hike in demand and energy charges.
Consumers, just like in the case of mobile users, will be provided a pre-paid card which will allow them to keep a check on consumption. âPre-paid meters will ensure that consumers will be more aware of their consumption unlike in the existing system where they could be unknowingly gluttonous in their use. The existing system, like credit cards, encourages consumption. Prepaid meters help consumers use electricity judiciously,â a top KSEB official said.
Consumers who opt for pre-paid meters, by making an advance payment, can buy certain units of power. Once the units are exhausted, they can purchase recharge coupons. The pre paid meter, sources said, could cost anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500. It will also have a consumer interface unit which will provide information regarding the unit and recharge instructions.
