Calling the nuclear plant at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu 'clean and safe', former president and missile scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Monday said the 2,000-MW plant was essential for 'power hungry' India.

"I have visited the plant and it is really modern and sophisticated. I am absolutely confident about its safety. What is important is that 2,000 MW of power is ready to be pumped into the grid. We are a power hungry nation," Kalam told reporters here.

Kalam, who visited the plant earlier this month, said anybody who had any query regarding the safety of the plant can meet him.

"I have met a lot of people (protestors). Anybody having any issues on safety can meet me. Nuclear energy like hydroelectricity and solar energy is safe and clean," he stated.

The nuclear plant, built by the Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) with Russian help, has two reactor units each with a generating capacity of 1,000 MW. The first unit is expected to go on stream in December.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs.13,160 crore ($2.6 billion).

The project work has come to a halt since last month following protests by villagers who fear for their safety in case of a nuclear accident.

Kalam was here to inaugurate a two-day conference on "Management Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow" at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to mark its golden jubilee celebrations.
