Kunhananthan gives in, finally
The suspected mastermind in the TPC murder, P.K. Kunhananthan, gave himself up to the magistrate at Vadakara on Saturday, after remaining a fugitive from the law for the past 50 days.
Kunhananthan, 61, a member of the CPI(M) Panoor area committee, fooled the police and surrendered at the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court, accompanied by party men.
Kunhananthan, against whom the police had issued a lookout circular, came in an auto rickshaw and slipped into the court room, accompanied by two party workers.
The court sent him for 10 days’ police remand. The alleged hatchet man showed no remorse as he came out of the courtroom, with a wry grin, to hoots and showers of abuses from the crowd. The court directed the police to subject him to medical checkup daily.
A few leaders of the Panoor area committee, including the area secretary, were seen on the court premises in the morning, giving rise to the speculation that the surrender was imminent.
Although a police team rushed to the spot to arrest him, the man dodged it, as well as scores of TV cameras.
The surrender followed the Thalassery district sessions judge V. Shercy dismissing his advance bail plea on June 19. The SIT team searched his house on Friday.
All assassins in the police net have named Kunhananthan as the mastermind behind the murder plot. The conspiracy to eliminate Chandrasekharan was hatched at his house.
Kunhananthan is the 23rd on the list of 50 persons accused of the murder .
