landslides cause havoc on J&K highway
The rising incidence of shooting of stones and landslides along the arterial Srinagar-Jammu highway is playing havoc with the people travelling between the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir. About a dozen passengers have been killed during the past few days after the vehicles they were travelling in were hit by shooting stones.
Muhammad Yaqoob Sheikh, 45, his spouse and three daughters were killed and two other family members were injured when the Maruti van they were travelling in to return to their Srinagar home from a visit to mausoleum of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti at Ajmer was buried under shooting stones at Khoni Nallah, about 120-km south of here on Saturday.
On Monday, two persons were killed and three others injured when a shooting stone hit their vehicle on the highway at Anokhi Fall. The dead have been identified as Indian Reserve Police (IRP) jawan Ayaz Ahmed and Bank employee Anil Kumar. The vehicle was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu when the incident occurred.
