Leaders pay tribute to Indira
President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 26th death anniversary at her samadhi at Shakti Sthal here on Sunday.
Vice-president Hamid Ansari, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also paid floral tributes to the former PM.
Devotional songs were played as the leaders paid tributes to the former PM, who was assassinated by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
Rich tributes were paid to the former Prime Minister in Mumbai and Chennai.
The nation also remembered former Union home minister and “Iron Man of India”, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his 135th birth anniversary in Delhi and Mumbai.
In Delhi, the Prime Minister paid floral tributes at the portrait of Patel at the Central Hall of Parliament House. The Lok Sabha Speaker, along with several Union ministers and members of Parliament, was also present.
At the state secretariat in Mumbai, Congress president Kripashankar Singh and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre led the party in paying homage to the leaders at their respective party offices.
In Chennai, senior Congress leaders, including TNCC president Thankgabalu, paid homage to Gandhi at the party office.
At the NCP office, office-bearers organised a function in memory of the two leaders and offered floral tributes.
