Leaders to Prez: Don’t open K’taka Assembly building
Politicians from the Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena have called upon President Pranab Mukherjee to refrain from inaugurating a Karnataka Assembly building in Belgaum, a district claimed by Maharashtra. The inauguration of the new Vidhan Soudha is scheduled for October 10.
Public works department minister Chhagan Bhujbal wrote to Mr Mukherjee on Monday saying, “The Maharashtra government has moved the Supreme Court over the border dispute with Karnataka. The issue remains unsolved. The new state Assembly building in Belgaum will strengthen Karnataka’s claim over the region. In such a situation, if the President accepts the Karnataka government’s invitation, it will support the feeling that the Centre always overlooks Maharashtra’s legitimate rights,” Mr Bhujbal wrote.
A Shiv Sena delegation led by MLA Subhash Desai and MLC Diwakar Rawate also met chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to request him to try and stop the inauguration. “The matter is sub judice. The state has made its stand clear in the Supreme Court on which the apex court is yet to give a decision. If the President inaugurates the Vidhan Soudha in the disputed area at the invitation of the Karnataka government it would send a wrong signal in the country, and hamper our case,” the Sena leaders said.
