Left dharna against price rise
The Opposition made a valiant bid corner the government on the issue of rising prices on Wednesday in both houses of the Parliament. Left party MPs belonging to the CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP, on the other hand, are planning to sit on dharna at the main gate of Parliament House on Thursday before the two houses commence their respective sittings for the day. They will be joined by MPs belonging to the AIADMK, BJD and TDP.
That the government was not inclined to have a discussion on rising prices under an adjournment motion was evident when Union finance Pranab Mukherjee told the House that there was no precedent for a discussion on price rise on the admission of an adjournment motion. Interestingly, the Opposition MPs cited several instances when the a discussion on price rise was held after an adjournment motion.
Speaker Meira Kumar disallowed the motion. She told the House: “I appreciate the concern expressed by the Opposition over price rise. The House certainly has a right to discuss it.” However, she added, “Adjournment motion can be extracted only in case of failure of the government to perform its duties.”
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said that the aim was to censure to government and it would not fall even if the motion was passed.
