Left plans to hold stir today
The Left parties will be holding nationwide protests on Monday following the arrival of US President Barack Obama in the capital while their MPs, barring from Forward Bloc, will listen to him when he addresses the Parliament. The top leadership of the four Left parties will participate in the day-long protests with senior leaders and MPs sitting on protests in the national capital. However, the MPs belonging to the CPI(M) and CPI will attend Mr Obama’s address in Parliament later in the day.
While CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has said that his party views Mr Obama as “different” from his predecessor George W. Bush, the Left activists will be hitting the streets across the country to protest the American policies. Defending the party’s decision not to boycott the US President’s address in Parliament, Mr Karat said they were not boycotting the address but were “definitely” going to use the occasion of his trip to reiterate their opposition to some of the policies of the US government. However, Forward Bloc took a different stand saying that it would not be proper for their MPs to be in Parliament and listen to the US President when their supporters are protesting outside.
