Left, right rally behind farmers
The Parliament gherao by hundreds of farmers led by the RLD chief Ajit Singh on Thursday saw leaders of both the Left and the right, the BJP, coming together to champion the cause of the agitating farmers. All the leaders cutting across the party lines demand from the government to bring a new law on land acquisition.
Sharing dais with Mr Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitely was seen in the company of the CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan and CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat.
The two Left leaders slammed the government for the alleged anti-farmer policies and demanded that a new law be made in place of the old land acquisition law. The western UP farmers had come to Delhi after spearheading protests at the Tappal village in Agra district of UP, after the police firing had led to death of few farmers who were protesting against little compensation for land being acquired for the Yamuna Expressways.
The RLD chief also managed to bring the JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan and TDP leaders to speak in favour of a new land acquisition law.
The RLD chief, while addressing the farmers, called upon the PM Manmohan Singh to do justice with the farmers whose land is being acquired by the state governments. “The PM has been congratulated for freeing our economy and many other things, then why the farmers are being kept captive when he frees the lives of hundreds of people. The government should not just act as a beneficiary of real estate agents,” stated Mr Ajit Singh.
