Left: US puts India on probation
Following the visit of US President Barack Obama to New Delhi, the CPI(M) on Tuesday attacked the government saying that the US has put India on “probation” in the UN Security Council and would decide on supporting its claim for permanent membership only after New Delhi “toes its line”.
A CPI(M) politburo statement said that the UPA government has “catered” to the US business and strategic interests by accepting the self-congratulatory approach that Obama recognises India as a world power instead of emphasising that India’s priority is on lifting poverty, hunger and disease. “The joint statement issued after the visit indicates that the main agenda was to prise open the Indian market for the business and commercial interests of the United States and its efforts to draw India into a closer security and military relationship,” it said. The party’s politburo member Sitaram Yechury said the presidential visit was primarily aimed at opening up markets in Asia, particularly India, “to protect the US economy and create jobs there”.
Mr Yechury said the government has promised to make suo motu statements on the Obama visit as well as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s recent visits abroad. The CPI meanwhile, alleged that most of Mr Obama’s “rhetoric and pronouncements” on international and regional affairs were “Sino-centric that do not conform to Indian national interest.”
Meanwhile, issues like internal security, including Maoist threat and right-wing extremism, Ranganath Mishra Commission report on religious and linguistic minorities, microfinance and the burden of interest payments, would also be raised by the Left parties during the ongoing session.
