Legal studies bill before Cabinet soon
Union law and justice ministry has proposed to set up regional centres of excellence for advanced legal studies and research. The government has prepared the Centres for Advanced Legal Studies and Research Bill, 2010, for the establishment of these centres and it is soon likely to be presented before the Cabinet for its approval.
The proposal for creation of regional centres of excellence for advanced legal studies and research was first reported by this paper in 2009. The plan and is a brainchild of Union law and justice minister M. Veerappa Moily and aims to promote more research in the field. The proposal aims to set up five regional centres for advanced legal studies and research centres that will study and conduct research on aspects of law and the various changes it is undergoing. Official sources stated that these centres will be set up in each of the centres of excellence on the lines of Bangalore Law School in different regions of the country.
“The schools will try to replicate Bangalore Law School, which is considered to be the premiere institute for legal education in the country,” sources added.
The move is also being seen as an effort to move the reform process in legal education sector forward. The institutes will conduct interactions with law institutes and universities in India and will also act as think tanks for the government on national as well as international levels.
The centres would also assist in the promotion of excellence in academics as well as legal education in India and the continuous process of legal education for the faculty. The faculty will be provided with refresher courses on all aspects of higher education and research in the field of law.
