LeT, Hizb plan to target J&K leaders
Following specific wireless intercepts of top commanders of terror outfits Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and Hizbul Mujahideen over the last few days the intelligence agencies have cautioned the Srinagar-based Unified Command that these militant groups will target important individuals, including political leaders in the Kashmir Valley, during the summer season.
A recent alert issued by the Intelligence Bureau goes on to state, “there is a great sense of desperation among terror groups operating in the Valley, particularly the Hizbul and Lashkar and they will go on to attack specific targets and individuals in the days to come.”
Highly-placed intelligence sources said the militant outfits are out to prove a point this time as the summer of 2011 was one of the most lean seasons as far as militancy in the Valley is concerned. Even from tourism point of view 2011 was considered one of the best seasons ever since militancy broke out in the state in 1989.
Thus, the militant outfits have already started preparing a blueprint to hit back with a vengeance this time around.
And the first glimpse of this came on last Thursday when a car carrying large quantity of explosive material exploded in Anantnag.
Investigations have now revealed that the explosive was being taken to Srinagar to carryout high intensity blasts during the coming tourist season.
It has also been revealed, sources added, that the explosive was being transported by a combined module of Lashkar and Hizbul.
“We have sensitised the Unified Command about the fresh alerts as the number of interceptions among the terror groups from across the border have shown an increased frequency in the last few days. This is a disturbing trend and we want the security forces to be a very high alert during the coming summer and tourist season,” a top security official remarked.
Sources also claimed that the interceptions have confirmed that both LeT and Hizbul Mujahideen this time have now joined hands to carryout terror attacks in the valley.
Incidentally, Hizbul Mujahideen is the biggest militant organisation operating in the valley and thus this new phenomenon has the security establishment worried.
Following the recent intelligence alert a meeting of the Unified Command will be convened shortly to do a fresh security review of the situation in the Jammu and Kashmir valley.
