Life-term to cop for attacking own camp
Agartala: A local court on Saturday sent a policeman to life imprisonment for attacking his own camp in North Tripura district with banned insurgents and killing two of his colleagues.
Additional session judge Bamdev Majumder on Saturday sentenced Rohid Mia, a constable of Tripura police to life imprisonment on charges of sedition, conspiracy and murder.
Altogether 48 witnesses recorded their statement against the accused.
DIG (Police Control), Mr Nepal Das, said,"Rohid Mia, the in-charge of Shermoon Tilla camp of the Tripura State Rifles had given shelter to two banned insurgents of National Liberation Front of Tripura for two days and attacked the camp, killing two of his colleagues, while injuring three others and decamped with arms and ammunition."
The incident occurred on September 23 in 2003 and the attackers fled with nine SLRs, one LMG, 20 grenades, two .303 rifles, 16 magazines and 1,285 cartridges.
The TSR jawans had been deployed to guard a microwave station. Mia sent 11 jawans to the forest in the morning to collect firewood. This left only five jawans in the camp.
Director-general of police, Mr Selima Ali, said the investigating officers, who probed Rohid Mia's case would be rewarded for efficient work.
