LK: Give in to Hazare

Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani here on Wednesday extended his support to social activist Anna Hazare and advocated enactment of the Lokpal Bill by incorporating the changes in the forthcoming session of Parliament.

Addressing an election rally in central Assam’s Nagaon district, Mr Advani claimed that it was the NDA which started a crusade against the Congress Party in Parliament but now it has become a peoples’ movement in the country.
“We started raising our voice against the corruption which subsequently got the approval of constitutional bodies like CAG and Supreme Court,” the BJP leader said, adding that the fast unto death of social activist Anna Hazare and hundreds of his supporters has given a new dimension to the anti-graft movement in the country.
Stating that Anna Hazare and people supporting him are very respectable people of this country, Mr Advani said, “I would like to request the UPA government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue.”
He said, “We also want the Lokpal Bill to become a credible and effective instrument to fight corruption.”
Lauding the initiative of Anna Hazare, Mr Advani also asserted that good suggestions of social activists must be incorporated in the bill and government should not make it a prestige issue.
Referring to the formation of a JPC, he said, “The UPA government was compelled to constitute a JPC but a complete Winter Session of Parliament was spoiled. I would like to suggest the UPA government to take up the issue of Lokpal Bill at the earliest so that an effective and credible Lokpal Bill is passed in the next session of Parliament,” Mr Advani said, adding that a government and Parliament cannot afford to ignore the popular wish of the people against corruption.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
