Lokayukta sought help from ex-CJI
The Karnataka Lokayukta, Justice Nitte Santosh Hegde, who withdrew his resignation on Saturday, said that after receiving Mr Advani’s call he had telephoned former Chief Justice of India J.S. Verma and sought advice. “He told me that if the government is willing to concede to my demands then I should not say no to Advaniji and I
made up my mind to continue,” he added. Mr Advani, who also issued a statement, said he has known Justice Hegde for a long time. “He is an eminent jurist for whom all of us have great respect. As Lokayukta of Karnataka, he has certain concerns. I am sure the government of Karnataka will address them earnestly.” At 4.30 pm the CM, accompanied by Mr Gadkari, state law minister Suresh Kumar and state advocate-general Ashok Harnahalli, met the Lokayukta at his official residence and requested him to withdraw his resignation. The CM assured Justice Hegde he would “fulfil all his concerns”. After a 40-minute meeting Mr Gadkari and Mr Yeddyurappa announced to that Justice Hegde has “thankfully” agreed to withdraw his resignation.
Mr Gadkari thanked the Lokayukta for accepting their request and assured him the party and the state would strengthen the anti-corruption watchdog.
