Loud pressure on Arjun silence
The heat on former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and senior Congress leader Arjun Singh is increasing by the day. His own party on Friday appeared to be pointing a finger towards him for allowing Mr Warren Anderson, the chairman of Union Carbide Corp. at the time of the Bhopal gas disaster, to flee to the US.
Another party leader, R.K. Dhawan, joined the chorus by putting the onus on the senior leader. “Mr Singh,” he said, “is the only person who can answer”. AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, meanwhile, retracted his earlier statement and on Friday said he could not sit in judgment.
AICC spokesperson Jaya-nthi Natarajan, replying to a question on whether Mr Arjun Singh had acted at the behest of Rajiv Gandhi, said, “I categorically deny any involvement of the (then) Central government.”
