Love affair led to triple murder

Murugan, the man arrested for a triple-murder after his daughter revealed the killings on a TV show, disclosed the sleaze story behind the murders to the police, who also arrested his wife Rajeswari and his brother Mathiyarasan.

Murugan’s victims included his childhood friend, Sekhar, Lavanya (Sekhar’s daughter) and Silambarasan (Lavanya’s husband). Murugan, who runs a furniture repair shop, killed them at different times in 2008 because of an affair he was having with Lavanya, 22.

“Murugan’s attempts to sexually exploit his 17-year-old daughter forced the girl to disclose the murders in a reality TV show. Murugan was also against her love affair with a local youth,” the police said.

The police began the probe after the Zee Tamil channel telecasted the reality show on May 28 and on Tuesday dug out three skeletons from the backyard of Murugan’s house.

Murugan told police that he was having an affair with Lavanya as he regularly visited Sekhar’s house. When Sekhar learnt of his daughter’s illicit relationship with Murugan, he asked Murugan to stop visiting his house.

Lavanya had also developed a relationship with Silambarasan, who was working in Murugan’s shop.
“The two got married without telling Sekhar and Murugan gave them shelter in his house in Villupuram so that he could continue his relationship with Lavanya,” the police said.

Nearly three months later, when Sekhar learnt that Murugan was sheltering his daughter and her husband, he confronted Murugan.

Murugan pacified him and later gave him liquor laced with poison with the knowledge of Silambarasan. The two buried the body the same night.

When Lavanya came to know about it, she threatened to inform the police. She was strangulated and buried.

Silambarasan, who knew of the two murders, started blackmailing Murugan. He was also poisoned and buried with the help of Murugan’s wife and brother, the police said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
