LS deadlocked over Opp. demand for JPC
The Opposition did not allow Parliament to function for the second consecutive day in the second week of the Winter Session as it stuck with the demand of a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the allocation of the 2G spectrum.
Amidst chaos in the Lok Sabha, the government tabled the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAGI) on the allocation of 2G spectrum, which has indicted telecom minister A. Raja. The report will now go to the Public Accounts Committee of the Parliament.
The Lok Sabha had to be adjourned as soon as it met for the day as Opposition members rushed to the well of the House demanding a JPC probe into the allocation of 2G spectrum. The Congress members also raised demands of a probe into the alleged land deals done by the Karnataka government led by B.S. Yeddyurappa. As chaos ruled, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House till noon.
When the House reassembled, the scene was the same. Girija Vyas in the chair quickly rushed through the papers to be laid in the House and asked MoS finance S.S. Palanimanickam to table the CAG report. Soon after sports minister M.S. Gill made a statement on the ongoing probe into the irregularities in the Commonwealth Games 2010, the chair adjourned the House till November 18 as the Opposition’s protests continued. The Parliament will be closed on November 17 on account of Id festival.
In the RS as soon as the House met, Opposition members including BJP, AIADMK and Shiv Sena rushed towards the well of the house even before Chairman Hamid Ansari could settle in his chair, demanding JPC probe into alleged scams including 2G spectrum allocation. While the Opposition members were demanding for JPC probe, Congress members were seen waving copies of newspapers carrying reports of Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s alleged involvement in allocation of land to his sons.
